Undergraduate Teacher Education Program
Theatre Licensure

The theatre major provides a foundation in theatre during the first two years of study, followed by an emphasis in either performance or design/technical theatre for the remaining two years of study. Courses are integrated with production work, and participation is required on stage or back stage on all theatre productions. The College holds memberships or participates in The American College Theatre Festival and other regional and state organizations and conferences, and students are required to participate, including auditioning and interviewing for summer apprenticeships and internships. All prospective theatre majors are required to audition or have a portfolio review and be interviewed by members of the department. The theatre program has a kindergarten through high school level teacher licensure program. Theatre majors enter graduate school or a theatre conservatory, as well as seek careers within the profession.

The theatre licensure program is designed to ensure that prospective candidates are competent and caring professionals. The curriculum is therefore designed to develop these areas:

  • creative problem solving
  • understanding of theatre history and literature
  • knowledge of theatre as a creative learning process
  • knowledge of political and social factors that influence educational decision-making
  • communication skills for grades K-12
  • understanding the learning and teaching process and current trends in teaching methods, materials, and equipment
  • teaching others to develop design/technical and performance skills
  • diagnosing theatre problems of students and prescribing solutions
  • developing a personal philosophy of theatre education
  • develop and demonstrate a professional commitment to the importance of theatre education in the public school curricula and the necessity of quality theatre instruction
  • skill in play directing
  • understanding of creative dramatics and the means to integrate it into other subject areas.

Candidates desiring North Carolina licensure should be aware that graduation with licensure may require more than the minimum 124 semester hours.
