Undergraduate Teacher Education Program
Social Studies Licensure
The history major presents a wide range of courses. All students pursuing this major take introductory survey courses (three total) in United States history as well as world history. With this background, the history major is ready for more advanced topics, examples of which include World War II and the Holocaust, the Modern Middle East, African American history, the Middle Ages, the Civil War, the history of political ideas, and women's history. The capstone course is a seminar devoted to the historian's craft, in which seniors read and discuss significant works of historical literature, and write a major research paper. Interested students can pursue teaching licensure in social studies at the middle or high school level. Also, a combined history and political science major is offered jointly with the Department of Political Science. History majors have found jobs in teaching, business, government, and other fields after graduation, while other recent graduates have been accepted into law school, divinity school, or advanced history programs.
Candidates desiring North Carolina licensure should be aware that graduation with licensure may require more than the minimum 124 semester hours.
