Undergraduate Teacher Education Program
Middle Grades Licensure
The purpose of the Middle Grades Education Program is to prepare licensed teachers to deliver appropriate instruction in an interdisciplinary, middle school environment. The general mission of the program is to develop teachers who will possess the skills, knowledge, and dispositions identified as essential teacher qualities by the National Middle School Association and the North Carolina Professional Teaching Standards Commission (Core Standards for All Teachers). The Middle Grades Education Program also provides experiences and coursework consistent with the conceptual framework of the Greensboro College Teacher Education Program. The curriculum in the Teacher Education Program is designed to develop teachers who serve as reflective practitioners by valuing liberating practices, learning as a lifelong process, and cultural diversity.
Course work and experiences are designed to assure that prospective middle grade teachers are liberally educated, have competence in two academic areas included in the middle grades curriculum, and have the professional competencies related to social and behavioral sciences, human growth and development, as well as teaching-learning theory. Furthermore, the degree program provides a system of supervised field experiences culminating with student teaching to assure proficiency in performing the responsibilities of a middle grades teacher.
