Piedmont Alternative Licensure (PAL) Program
The PAL Program, which began as a collaborative project between Greensboro College and Bennett College, provides the professional education sequence needed for teacher licensure and a support network for lateral-entry candidates.
The PAL model is based on the success Project ACT alternative licensure program at East Carolina University. Since 1993, Project Act has successfully assisted lateral-entry teachers in the eastern part of the state to obtain full licensure. The PAL Program's goal is to provide that same opportunity in the Piedmont.
Philosophically, the PAL Program is based upon three essential ideas about teaching and learning:
- A commitment to providing qualified, enthusiastic, confident, and dedicated teachers for K-12 children in North Carolina's classrooms;
- A recognition of life experiences of adults who seek to become teachers;
- A belief that the teaching profession rests upon specialized knowledge and skills and that this knowledge and these skills require instruction, guidance, reflection, and practice in order to be adequately developed.
This, we have developed a program that addresses a critical need, values partnership, and maintains the integrity of the profession. In addition, it provides networking, mentoring, and support.
PAL licensure areas include middle grades language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies; secondary English, mathematics, biology, and social studies; and K-12 art, music, physical education, Spanish, and theatre.
